PERFORMANCE CLASSES FOR GUITARISTS, DANCERS AND CANTE STUDENTS

Palmas

Thurs. 7:30 pm Palmas (9/4/14-12/4/14, 13 classes, no class 11/27)

  • This class is now open to students with less experience who have enough rhythm to start learning the base, or straight time, while older members of the class work doblando, or doing countertime.
  • New less experienced students must keep up with the tempos and not disrupt the flow of rhythm for those able to do countertime.
  • Portions of the class will also utilize straight time to accompany cante or guitar, following the instructor to change shading (sordas y claras), and closing in the proper places (cortes).
  • Students will acquire basic patterns for tangos, bulerias, alegrias, solea, siguiriyas with hands and foot
  • Work on counter-time and tempo variations
  • Full term enrollment advisable, but Walk-ins are permitted. Walk-ins must reserve in advance.

Flamenco Music Ensemble (Intermediate/Adv. Level)

Thurs. 8:30 pm (9/4/14-12/4/14, 13 classes, no class 11/27)

  • Work on solo cantes and dance arrangements in all palos. Prepare for performances in our Studio/Theater two-four times per year.
  • Each class will now focus two 15-minute segments on accompanying different dances, one segment accompanying a guitar solo with palmas, and one segment accompanying guitar and cante with palmas. There will be occasional HOT SEAT sessions with only one student guitarist, one student dancer, one singer, and one palmero. The instructor will observe only, while taking notes and offering critical evaluation.
  • Concert planned for Dec 5, 2014 involving advanced students from Flamenco Latino and dance students from Flamenco Vivo's Palo Series of workshops.
  • For flamenco guitarists who can play in compas without starting and stopping and dance students who can get through most of their choreographies without starting and stopping.
  • For singers from Alfonso Cid's classes, or who have studied with other professional cantaores who have passed through New York City.
  • Memorization and command of your own material is essential. The class does not spend a lot of time breaking down individual phrases of cante, portions of falsetas or how to fit your material into compás.
  • The participants must have the ability to quickly digest material and concepts. The pace is much quicker than the other group classes or any private class.
  • Full term enrollment required.

All students get access to library of mp3s recorded in class (not available to public).
